CrossFit–Day 1

Before I went on vacation I decided that I needed to get serious about getting to the gym. Well, now I’m back and followed through with my decision.

I joined Pikes Peak CrossFit and had my first “on-ramp” class today. I knew that I was out of shape, but damn. The first 40 minutes or so was all introductory to learn how to do some of the exercises. That went pretty well and I felt good about it.

Then there was a “base-line” workout that consisted of:

  • 400 meter run
  • 10 pull-ups
  • 20 push-ups
  • 30 sit-ups
  • 40 squats

The whole thing took me just under 13 minutes. In the grand scheme of things it was really, really sad. I was a bit winded by the end of the run. The pull-ups were assisted and were basically 1 at a time with very little form. The push-ups were a bit better as I was able to do a few at a time. The sit-ups brought me a bit of comfort as I was able to do those in just a couple of sets. The squats made me feel pretty pathetic. They took me several sets and by the time I got to them basically everyone else had already finished the workout.

By the end of it, I felt sick and light-headed. The drive home almost gave me motion-sickness. I got home and the walk to the door was the longest walk I had ever done.

I came in the house, drank some Gatorade and decided to lay down for a bit. I woke up an hour later and realized I couldn’t sit up.

My muscles had revolted on me. My abs and arms felt like jello. It felt like when your foot falls asleep and you try to walk on it anyway. Pretty funny stuff.

Overall, I fell good about it even though I’m sure I’m going to hurt like hell tomorrow.

Re: Switching Website Hosts

So after I got all setup with MediaTemple and had made the decision to switch, there ended up being some issues that kept me from going with them as the hosting provider for my sites as well as the site of my clients.

The first issue was one that made me feel as though I had been a bit misled. They told me that they had a fully automated billing system that came as an included feature with the reseller service.

Though this was true, they didn’t tell me that in order to use it I would have to buy an SSL to get all of the functionality out of it. Also, when I had questions about integrating it into their reseller service, they told me that because it was a third-party application that they didn’t support it.

The other issue is that they run on a Plesk server setup. I’ve got nothing against Plesk, but I’m much more familiar with cPanel and migrating my clients’ sites from cPanel to Plesk would have been much more time consuming and frustrating in the long run.

There were things that I liked about MediaTemple, though. The speed at which their servers run is great. The customer service is top-notch. I even like the user interface of their customer area.

After doing some more research and getting a recommendation, I ended up switching my entire hosting platform to VPS Latch.

They offer cPanel hosting and their prices are reasonable. They also run a fully managed hosting service but still offer their VPS clients root access to their accounts. So, basically, if I want to I can log in and make the changes I want. On the other hand, if I want or need someone else to take care of something they will do it. And they do things in a very short amount of time.

Long time, No Blog

Normally when it’s been almost 3 months between blog posts I try to come up with some excuse as to why and some promise that it won’t happen again.

Not this time.

I’ve been busy with work at the office as well as my own clients and side projects. Sometimes the last thing I want to do is spend more time at a computer.

I won’t say a lot has happened since my last blog post, but the little that has happened has been exciting.

I finally booked my flight to Scotland! I’m leaving July 31st and I’ll be returning on the 14th. We’ve got all kinds of stuff planned and I can’t wait to get over there and start the adventure!

I keep thinking I’m going to add more to this but it’s been sitting with the above content for a solid day. Ready, set, GO!

Switching Website Hosts

I’ve been with HostGator (henceforth known as HG) since April of 2008. There were three main reasons for my signing up with them:

1. They had a special sign-up deal of only 1 penny for the first month.
2. I needed a reseller hosting account.
3. I didn’t do nearly enough research.

In all fairness, they were fine for the first year or so. I might even give them a year and a half of good service. I even suggested them to lots of people.

Within the last few months, things have gotten bad. Day after day of down-time. I spent hours of time in support chat being told that their admins were “aware of the situation” and they were “doing eveything they could get the situation fixed.”

I’ve spent the last couple of weeks doing research. Lots of it. I narrowed my results down to RackSpace and Media Temple.

The issue that I ran into with RackSpace is that they are geared toward larger companies more than they are the “little guy” and, as a result, didn’t really fit into my hosting budget.

I finally took the plunge and bought the basic hosting package (Grid-Service) tonight. I moved a site over from HG and the part of the process that took the longest was actually downloading the files from HG and uploading them to Media Temple. Just as a reference, I’ve had my Media Temple account for 2 hours and I’ve already got this blog running on it. Not too bad

I also got my email setup on Google Apps just to simplify my life.

The interface on Media Temple took me all of 5 minutes to navigate through and get figured out. I’ll be posting more updates to this as I get everything migrated over.

My Perfect Isa-Combo

So I think I’ve come up with the perfect combination of Isa Products to give me the endurance for a good run in the mornings. But it actually starts the night before.

About an hour before bed I take a shot of Ionix® Supreme and a shot of Cleanse for Life™ along with a IsaLean® Shake and an IsaFlush®. I follow this with at least 8 ounces of water.

In the morning I roll out of bed repeat the same recipe and then hit the gym about 30 minutes later. I’ve noticed on the days that I do this, I’m able to run for a LOT longer and I feel MUCH less exhausted throughout the run and my recovery times are next to nothing.

Anyway, if anyone has any input on this, please share! :)

Back on the Wagon…

…or treadmill in this case.

So it’s been almost 15 days since the last time I posted anything on here. Somehow I managed to lose sight of my weight loss and fitness goals somewhere near the beginning of that 15 days.

I managed to revert back to my old eating habits for the most part and I suffered for it a bit. My attitude deteriorated and my sleep patterns went to almost non-existent.

Over the weekend I decided that I needed to get my act together and get back on track with eating right, going to the gym and (hopefully) sleeping better and on a more regular schedule.

I went food shopping over the weekend and bought healthy foods like salmon, brown rice, green vegetables, fruits and juices. I spent a bit of extra money to make sure that what I was getting was (for the most part) organic.

When I got home from the store I cleared my refrigerator of all the stuff in there that I probably shouldn’t have in there. Basically when I was done, my fridge was empty.

I was in bed by 11pm  last night, which is exceptionally early for me as of late and was up at 5:15 this morning to get my day started the right way (for me anyway). I hit the gym.

I only ran for 15 minutes, but it ended up being 1.25 miles and after I worked through a couple of tight calves, the run felt good.

There was a bit of apprehension about following my normal routine of getting on the scale after a workout since I hadn’t been to the gym in more than a week.

But I got on the scale anyway.

When I got on and saw that I had managed to gain none of that weight back (still at 199 pounds) I was amazed and very excited! Though I had managed to slip up for a week, I managed to maintain.

I think what helped was getting in a Isagenix shake every morning shortly after waking up. I’ve heard that getting in a good amount of protein within an hour of waking up dramatically impacts the way our body burns fat throughout the rest of the day.
